Colorful • 10 slides

Welcome

This short guide walks you through: creating your first wallet, securely logging in to Ledger® Live, understanding the Recovery Phrase, best security practices, and how to manage crypto assets safely.

What you will learn

  • How to download and sign in to Ledger® Live
  • Device setup basics and PIN management
  • Secure handling of your Recovery Phrase
  • Sending, receiving, and checking transactions

Who this is for

Totally new to hardware wallets, or moving funds from an exchange — this guide prioritizes security without unnecessary jargon.

Note

This presentation is educational. Always follow official Ledger® instructions when handling private keys or recovery phrases.

Step 1 — Download Ledger® Live

Official source

Always download Ledger® Live from the official Ledger website. Verify the URL and avoid installer files from third-party sites. Installing from unofficial sources risks compromised software.

Checklist

  • Visit ledger.com > Downloads
  • Choose your OS (Windows / macOS / Linux)
  • Verify installer signature when available

Step 2 — Connect & Initialize

Plug in your Ledger® device

Follow on-screen instructions to create a PIN. Choose a PIN you can remember but that isn't easily guessable. The device will then generate a Recovery Phrase — write this down on the provided card.

Do not store digitally

Never store your Recovery Phrase on a computer, phone, or cloud. Paper or metal backups are recommended.

Step 3 — Ledger® Live Login

Create a Ledger® Live password

Ledger® Live uses a local password to encrypt app data on your machine. This is different from the device PIN and Recovery Phrase — think of it as an additional layer protecting the app on your computer.

Two-factor note

Ledger® Live does not replace the hardware-level security provided by your Ledger device. Two-factor authentication for exchanges and other services remains important.

Step 4 — Secure your Recovery Phrase

Why it matters

The Recovery Phrase is the single most important secret: it restores access to your funds. Whoever knows it can control your assets — guard it like the keys to a safe.

Best practices

  • Write it down on the provided recovery card or a metal backup.
  • Store copies in separate secure locations (e.g., safe deposit box).
  • Never share, photograph, or type the phrase into a device connected to the internet.

Step 5 — Add accounts in Ledger® Live

Install apps on your device

Ledger devices use small apps to support each blockchain. Use Ledger® Live to install only the apps you need — this keeps the device lean and secure.

How to add an account

  • Open Ledger® Live → Manager → install the app
  • Go to Accounts → Add account → follow prompts
  • Accounts are read-only in the app until you confirm transactions on your device

Step 6 — Receive & Verify

Receiving funds

Always verify the receiving address on your Ledger device screen before sharing it. Malware on a compromised computer can change addresses shown in Ledger® Live — the device screen is the single source of truth.

Sending funds

When sending, double-check amounts and recipient addresses and confirm the transaction on the hardware device. This requires physically approving each transaction.

Step 7 — Ongoing Security

Daily habits

  • Keep firmware & Ledger® Live up to date
  • Avoid public Wi‑Fi for transactions
  • Use strong, unique passwords and a reputable password manager

When to seek help

If you see unexpected prompts, unfamiliar addresses, or receive messages asking for your Recovery Phrase, stop immediately and consult official Ledger support channels.

Troubleshooting & Recovery

Common issues

  • Device not detected — try different cable/port or update drivers
  • App not appearing — reinstall via Ledger® Live Manager
  • Forgot PIN — use Recovery Phrase to restore on a new device

In case of theft or loss

If you believe your Recovery Phrase is compromised, transfer funds to a new wallet as soon as possible after setting up a new secure Recovery Phrase.
